Artistic Research

We strongly believe in the value of interdisciplinary artistic research, as a core phase for powerful contemporary dance performances. On the artistic strand of E-MOTIONAL, the interdisciplinary artistic research is the flagship of the project. A series of 5 cross-border working periods are organised alternatively in Dublin, Riga, Limassol, London and Bucharest to question the emotional body and its relation with these cities.

Two different artistic teams have embarked together in a co-authorship process to explore the relation between the human body, the urban and geo-political context and new technologies.

Each artistic team is composed of five artists, one from each country, who may also come from different disciplines. The groups have the chance to interact, work and benefit from the support of three local dancers or other associated artists. Each research period also includes a number of workshops and video-lectures open to local participants and artists, and concludes with an informal presentation open to the local audience in the respective city.

The artistic research is accompanied by Cosmin Manolescu (choreographer & E-MOTIONAL project leader) who is acting as a facilitator during these residences.

Mădălina Dan
(Romania) studied choreography at the University of Drama and Film in Bucharest. She has a M.A. in playwriting. She was a danceWeber in 2008. In 2010 she was an invited artist in the School of Dance (Arizona State University). Her work was presented in Sprindance Festival Utrecht, Tanzquartier Wien, Balkan Dance Platform Novi Sad, eXplore Dance Festival – Bucharest, Temps d’Images – Cluj, SouthBank Center & Chisenhale Dance Space London, Fabrik Potsdam, Dance Theatre Workshop – New York, etc. Her latest work, developed in collaboration with Mihaela Dancs, (anti)aging, benefited from an E-Motional residence in Riga and was recently premiered in Bucharest, Cluj and Riga. In relation with the emotional body her research is based on some general topics such as: the translation and transformation of emotions into movement and action, the representation and the esthetic of an emotion, performing emotions, empathy and manipulation when it comes to an audience.

Fearghus Ó Conchúir (Ireland) is an independent choreographer and dance artist. Brought up in the Ring Gaeltacht in Ireland, he completed degrees in English and European Literature at Magdalen College Oxford, before training at London Contemporary Dance School. In addition to his own choreography, he has danced for other companies such as Adventures in Motion Pictures, Catapult Dance Company, Ciotóg, Claire Russ Ensemble and Arc Dance Company. He is a current Board member of Project Arts Centre and of Dance Digital and a former board member of Create and of Dance Ireland. His major creative preoccupation has been the relationship between bodies and buildings in the context of urban regeneration, a preoccupation that has manifested itself in film and in live performance in Europe, the US and China. Recent projects include Tattered Outlaws of History – a 12-screen site-specific installation of films about the Martello Towers of Fingal, commissioned by Fingal Co Council Per Cent for Art Scheme; Dialogue – a collaboration with Chinese dance artist Xiao Ke, performed for the Shanghai World Expo; and Mo Mhórchoir Féin – dance film commissioned for RTÉ’s Dance on the Box series. In 2011, in addition to premiering Tabernacle, he is collaborating with Dan Dubowitz to make a new site specific installation in response to the Martello Towers of England’s East Coast that premieres in June. www.fearghus.net

(Latvia) in 12 lines

Luke Pell
is a UK based artist whose interdisciplinary practice uses the autobiographical body as a beginning for exploring intimate human experience, the relationship between people and place, community and environment. Collaborating with socially engaged artists to create performance for unusual spaces. A background in body-based and site-specific practices he trained in Contemporary Performance at the University of Winchester and has an MA in Theatre & Performance from Queen Mary University of London. He has created work with Liz Atkin, Rachel Gomme, Catherine Long, Athina Vahla and David Harradine and performed for Helena Hunter and Rosemary Lee. An advocate for alterity in dance he has also produced outdoor projects for Shobana Jeyasingh and Marc Brew and co-chaired the Dance Educators Group with Kate Scanlan. He leads the M-Teach Dance module: Inclusive Practice for the RAD alongside ongoing work with Candoco Dance Company to engender change around dance and disability. www.lukepell.org [Photo credit Liz Atkin]

I am Arianna Marcoulides and I was born in Limassol in 1982. I am a contemporary dancer, performer and teacher. I took dance seriously enough to want to take it beyond the after school ballet classes offered to me in my childhood and early teens and was accepted for further education at SEAD (Salzburg) in 2001, much to my surprise. After graduation I went back to Cyprus dancing for the burgeoning dance scene of newly formed dance companies and choreographers. Growing slightly bored of myself and seeking new input, information and inspiration an opportunity came knocking from a new course in Frankfurt in 2007, and I attended the new MA in Contemporary Dance Education at the Hochschule fur Musik und Darstellende Kunst until 2009. I came back to Cyprus again with an itch to create my own work, starting with the piece, “Fellow People” in 2009 for the Cyprus Dance Platform with Katja Mustonen and Patrick Giesberts. “About Side Walks”  in 2010, a dance video with Eleana Alexandrou and Eva Korae, which was shown at various locations throughout the island and “Shelf Life” in 2011 for the Cyprus Platform developing the concept with Eva Korae who also designed the set. I had a DanceWeb scholarship for the summer of 2011.

Mircea Ghinea (Romania). I have been a dancer for the most of my life. I never choreographed for myself (except in the university), but I did it a lot in the others’ performances. So, a real dancer, let’s say. I have danced in many Romanian choreographers performances so far, almost with all of them (Mihai Mihalcea, Cosmin Manolescu, Razvan Mazilu, Florin Fieroiu, Maria Baroncea & Eduard Gabia, etc). Of course, with many from abroad too (Massimo Gerardi, Isabelle Fuchs, Galina Borissova, Brynjar Bandlien). I like very much the dance itself, so I tried many directions (that are not familiar with my education) like street, hip-hop, jazz, etc. I know a lot of people in dance overall, each one with its own world, style. I like a lot the human body itself, maybe too much, so everything that is related to it interests me. Now I am getting older, let’s say, and my body starts to feel this, though there is still much left. About ten years ago I did a brake with dance for about one year and a half. At that time I didn’t want to perform anymore. But I was around the stage, I did light-design in a small dance theatre. This was a very good experience because I worked with many Romanian choreographers, plus I realized that light is a strong element performance wise. Being pretty skilled I worked a couple of times as set designer, or building some scenography for some dance performances. Working physically with materials (whatever they are) is also one of my pleasures.

Laura Murphy (Ireland). On completion of a MA, Contemporary Dance Performance at University of Limerick (2003), Laura trained at Trinity Laban, London graduating in 2006. Subsequently, Laura established herself as a dance artist, performer, choreographer and teacher. As a professional dancer, Laura has worked with choreographers including Daria Fain (NYC), Steve Batts (Ire), Mary Nunan (Ire) and Elena Rolla (It), and performed at leading events such as Biennale de Lyon (2009) with Italian Dance Company, DAS. Laura’s choreographic work has been performed internationally to include New York, Canada, Sweden and Iceland, along side various national venues. Laura is also co-founder and co-director of Folded Productions with dance artist Ailish Claffey. With a specialisation in Choreological Studies, clarity and communication are at the forefront of Laura’s artistic ambitions. Interdisciplinary collaborations being an integral part of her current work, Laura is exploring the representation of movement within other artistic disciplines. Kaspars Lielgalvis (Latvia). I am a Riga-based artist. I am interested in interdisciplinary team-working combining different fields of art. My educational background is textile art, but the most exciting creative experience I’ve got was co-working with 2 artists from different disciplines, when we were creating together several art performances. We were working with live and recorded sound, light and projected images. As well we invited people to act in our performances in both spontaneous and previously revived ways. Sometimes we did it ourselves. We always let the space for improvisation. It was fun and we enjoyed, but due to lack of income, after 3 years we split up and didn’t continue. After I have learned and worked as a graphic designer, photographer and set designer. Right now I am working on development of an artist-run art center in Riga. We have an exhibition space, artist studios and residency program. We organise presentation events, poetry slams and exhibitions. We fight for better conditions for contemporary art in Latvia. We are open for all kind of disciplines, however the most of us are visual artists. For me participation in e-motional bodies & cities will be the first connection with contemporary dance and I am looking forward for this risk – to create a performance again together with unknown people.

Gemma Riggs (UK) is a film, video and installation artist who graduated from Wimbledon School of Art in 2002. Gemma’s work centres around a fascination with rhythm and fluidity, with the power of repetition and using still or moving image to transform, alter and capture a real experience. Her use of repetition and rhythm play on our perceived sense of memory and experience and the fragmentation that occurs with time. Gemma has worked extensively within theatre and performance, developing a real passion for working with the ‘live’ and investigating how image technologies work with that. She enjoys using space and environment to explore immersive experience. Creating imagery that incorporates live-action, animation, scratched film, drawing and photography, she creates a rich and textured visual experience.

Alexis Vassiliou (Cyprus) was born in Limassol in 1978. Between 2003 and 2007 he took classical and contemporary dance classes with various dance teachers in Cyprus. He then went on to study dance at Trinity-Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in the United Kingdom (2007-2008). While a student there, he received the Sylvia Bodmer Memorial Fund Award Prize in Choreological Studies and also worked with choreographers Lizzi Kew-Ross and Fleur Darkin. During the summer of 2008 he went to Austria as a Dance-Web scholarship holder for the 25th ΙmpulsTanz Vienna International Dance Festival. In 2009 he founded ΝΟΤΗΙΝGTODECLARE in Cyprus, with the primary aim to create, develop, produce and present performing art pieces and shows, both locally and abroad. He has, since then, directed the performances: “Blissfully Happy” (2009)- Limassol Municipal Hall-Cyprus, “Peep Hole” for the 10th Contemporary Dance Platform-Rialto Theatre-Cyprus (2010) and “Snap”  for the 11th Contemporary Dance Platform-Rialto Theatre-Cyprus (2011). Since 2009 he has also been working as a performer (Cyprus). He collaborated with the following companies: Solipsism, pelma.liaharaki, Chorotheatro Omada Pende, Interact, Echo-Arts and Omada One/Off.

THE CITIES, THE THEMES

Dublin and Limassol:
exploration, discovery, encounters around the emotional body/ emotional city theme in connection with the existing political struggles in the islands of Ireland and Cyprus will nourish the research in Dublin and Limassol. A virtual dimension will add to these layers, as the E- from the title also points, since the links between movement and new technologies will be explored in this frame.

Riga: deformation of space and time, by using actions from everyday life and details extracted from urban realities in order to create illusions. Artists will use movements (motion), electronics (-e-) and light design as tools for emotionally touching the audience.

London: the megatropolis of this huge city and the underlying living emotional body of its inhabitants as they go about their daily lives. Choosing a site specific situation, based in the East of London near the up and coming Olympics site, the artists involved will be given the opportunity to explore the surrounding areas, and through their observations, using video, audio and written performance documentation methods, find their response to the multi-cultural and diverse backgrounds of its inhabitants.

Bucharest: for a final one-week residency in which they will exchange information about their process and outcomes at the end of one month research. The themes already developed will engage and confront the postcommunist architecture and the energy of an emerging moving city -Bucharest.
