GT Fellowship: Onur Topal-Sümer (TR) in Romania

Choreographer and curator Onur Topal-Sümer (Turkey) is in Romania between September 9-30, benefiting from a Gabriela Tudor fellowship in dance management in the frame of E-Motional. The fellowship aims to encourage cultural exchange and collaborations between dance administrators from the E-Motional partner countries (Romania, Cyprus, Ireland, Latvia, Great Britain and Turkey). The fellowship programme is dedicated to the memory of Gabriela Tudor, who contributed immeasurably to the development of a livelier and more international Romanian dance scene, and extends an already existent initiative launched in 2010 in UK together with Ratiu Foundation and body > data > space.

During her stay in Romania, Onur Topal Sümer will meet artists and organisations from Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca, will participate to event and also hold a presentation of the Dance Camera Istanbul Festival, among whose initiators she counts herself, while also securing the directorship since 2010. The presentation will include screenings of video dance movies by Turkish artists and will take place on September 20 at 20.00 at ZonaD – Serial Paradise Studio in Bucharest administered by Gabriela Tudor Foundation.

Dance Camera Istanbul is an international Dance Film & Dance Photography Festival founded by a group of independent artists and art explorers who are building a greater awareness of multicultural art forms in connection with the field of dance. Dance Camera Istanbul aims to share established artists’ works and encourage emerging artists who are focused on and interested in the artistic and experimental dimension of making dance for the camera. One of the main goals of the festival is to support, exchange ideas and provide collaboration opportunities, to filmmakers, dancers, choreographers, photographers, musicians and dance and digital technology explorers.

Onur Topal-Sümer is from Istanbul (Turkey), and has trained ballet in Vaganova Technique for 12 years and started to work on modern & contemporary dance in 1997. She has a B.F.A. in Dance from Istanbul Yildiz Technical University, Art and Design Faculty and in 2006 she has completed her M.F.A. with a fellowship in Dance with an emphasis in choreography and digital technology from University of California, Irvine (USA).

Onur has trained, performed and staged her original works across Europe, USA & Asia and had the privilege to work with legendary dance artist Donald McKayle, Yvonne Rainer, Loretta Lvingstone, Pina Bausch Wupertal Dance Company members, among many other acclaimed pioneering artists from all around the world. Onur has also worked as a performing dance artist in Istanbul State Theater, Loretta Livingston & Dancers (Los Angeles), No Dancers’ Company (Germany), Archtiexture Dance Company (Irvine, CA), Full Radius Dance and Beacon Dance in Atlanta and currently working as an independent choreographer, dancer, experimental media artist/filmmaker. She has commissioned to create collaborative site specific choreographic productions and video installations in Atlanta for Flux 2010&2011, choreographed stage works and created multimedia projects for Full Radius Dance and other companies. Onur has produced & organized many independent video dance and live contemporary dance events in Istanbul and USA and she is the “Dance Camera Istanbul” Festival director & curator. As well as creating she teaches dance, Pilates, dance for camera, partnering and improvisation. Onur loves collaborating, creating, sharing and experimenting life through various ideas, arts, open mind & heart and highly interested in researching texture in experimental film, using alternative projection surfaces and researches on social issues, human relationships, cultural differences and its effects on movement and bodies.
