Bucharest, July 15-30

lecture: July 23, 20:00 [ODD, str. Dr. Iacob Felix 72A]
presentation: July 29, 19:00 [Replika, str. Lânăriei nr. 93-95]
Between July 15-30, ZonaD and E-Motional activities continue in Bucharest with ZonaD dancelab / MAP – sharing of processes – an artistic research and creative process framework, aimed at the development of movement based projects in a dynamic lab which generates exchange between different artists and projects. Residents artists are participating to group encounters and discussions dedicated to their artistic practice and process, the focus of their ongoing research/ project and may join the rehearsals among them, relating to the content proposed in the respective projects. The lab includes rehearsals, a workshop and a talk and will conclude with an informal sharing process presentation open to the audience. The project is organised by Gabriela Tudor Foundation in partnership with: Replika Centre for Educational Theatre, ODD, Modulab, Zeppelin. Cultural project co-funded by the Administration of the National Cultural Fund and in the frame of „Ești București” cultural programme of ArCuB – the Centre for Cultural Projects of Bucharest Municipality. With support from the Culture programme of the EU.
INVITED PROJECTS
> Gemma Riggs (UK, visual artist) & Laura Murphy (IE, choreographer)
Continued exploration: A dance artist meets visual artist: Where are our interstices? Where do our distinctive territories intersect and where do they collide? Where does collision provide generative friction, to spark new alchemical substances? / What unexpected collaborative ideas and dialogues could happen – in terms of footage and movement?
Exploration of place: An exploration the proposed neighbourhood in Bucharest: A territorialisation. How a body might interact with the nooks and crannies and corners, the lines, the contours and shapes, the imprints and visual traces; defining the colour palette of a city. How might the camera record these interactions?
Lines / form / architecture: How do architectural lines and form affect the performative body? How do they impact on its trajectory and influence its gesture? The contours within a frame, resonating with the movement of the body, forming new and surprising compositions. To see the body’s movement as an exploration of a composition; To see the composition as an exploration of the moving body. The body becomes an object within an image. The image becomes ‘the set’ for the body. How architecture holds us, contains us and affects our movements and orbits.
How our bodies often slot between structures, the structures provide spheres of interaction, and solitude. How architecture provides a stage: performative spaces, familiar spaces and a tendency for routine and repetition. How do we comply with and subvert from these routines and repetitions?
Pace / time: An exploration of the rhythms of human movement in relation to the space and the urban environment. To look at the pace of movement: where extremes of pace within the body reveal more markedly the rhythms of the world around them. To use the tempo of the body as a means of re-exerting its presence within its architectural surroundings.
> Rogerio Nuno Costa (PT, performance artist ): UNIVERSITY – a project including workshops, talks, lectures. Open workshop – “Dogma 2005: A Prison without Walls”
As part of his research, Rogerio will give a 5-day intensive workshop aimed for art practitioners and theorists who have already developed some work in the fields of performing or visual arts, willing to be confronted with a set of rules that will question their notions of artistic freedom, the methodology behind their creative processes and, above all, the means by which they operate with the formats surrounding the concept of “memory”: archives, documents, leftovers, traces and tracks. The workshop is 50% practical/50% theoretical, and is developed around collective brainstormings, group research, short presentations (lectures/talks), thorough documentation (video, photo and text) and, if possible, a broader audience final presentation. The workshop also includes a talk focused on the idea of “self-obstruction” (by the reposition of the artist inside an intriguing critical frame: “the prison without walls”) as a way to achieve a more conscious and transversal notion of “artistic freedom”. This moment can work perfectly as an introduction to projects created by the workshop participants themselves. Some excerpts of the movie “The 5 Obstructions” [by Danish filmmakers Lars von Trier & Jørgen Leth] will be discussed as a starting point and/or as an illustration of the questions and problematics produced. This presentation may assume many different kinds of media: photography, installation, video, sound, text-based performance, dance, drama, conference/lecture-based performance, etc. The workshop is developed in connection with Universidade/ University, the ongoing research project including workshops, group sessions and artist talks, undertaken by Rogério Nuno Costa.
> Replika Centre for Educational Theatre, RO (Mihaela Michailov, playwright, Radu Apostol, director, Viorel Cojanu & Mihaela Rădescu – actors) & Arcadie Rusu (RO, choreographer) : Born in 2000 – a dance piece wit a 12-year old kid
The project starts from few themes from the universe of adolescents – growing up, sexuality, tabuus, children-parents relations and will be developed in a workshop frame. The intention is to put the basis for a new performance that may become part of the Replika repertory. The collaboration between a professional artist and an amateur represents one of the priorities of the Replika Centre. The Centre is an artist-run initiative that aimes to develop and promote artistic research and creations that deal with urgent subjects from contemporary society, valorizing an art that is solidary with the world we are living in. Replika aims to become a platform for participative art and pedagogical creation. Artists, activists, educators action through artistic initiatives, educates one another and bring changes in contemporary society. It focuses on projects with social relevance, participative art, workshops, debates, conference, film screening on educational themes, meetings with teachers and initiators of projects with social impact.
REAL TIME DOC: “Institute of the Present”
ZonaD dancelab includes a specific documentation component in real time focusing on the artistic processes ongoing in the lab, developed in connection with the Institute of the Present, an initiative by Ștefania Ferchedău. This strand will be undertaken through contributions from writer Elena Vlădăreanu, artist Rogerio Nuno Costa and producer Ștefania Ferchedău, and can be followed on ZonaD blog at http://zonadstudio.wordpress.com. The Institute of the Present is an emerging discursive platform for research and analysis of contemporary culture, aimed at generating a new encounter place based on free knowledge and co-ownership of existing resources. The Institute will function as a physical space and online resource platform, gathering, developing, discussing archives from performative and visuals arts of the last 25 years in Romania, and creating new contents on ongoing artistic phenomena.
