  • Decide the number of outgoing circuits: one circuit per load or group of loads, plus spare ways for future expansion .

Step 2: Select Protective Devices

  • Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs): Protect individual circuits from overload and short circuits. Choose the rated current slightly above the calculated load current .
  • Residual Current Devices (RCDs/RCCBs): Protect against earth leakage and electric shock. Typically installed for groups of circuits or high-risk areas .
  • Main Switch/Isolator: Allows complete disconnection of the supply for maintenance .
  • Surge Protective Devices (SPD): Optional, for protection against voltage spikes .

Step 3: Size Busbars and Neutral/Earth Bars

  • Busbars: Must carry the total incoming current. Select copper or aluminum bars with adequate cross-section to handle the load and short-circuit current .

Step 5: Choose Enclosure Size and Layout

  • Enclosure: Must accommodate all devices, busbars, wiring, and allow heat dissipation. Consider IP rating, material, and mounting method .
  • Internal Layout: Arrange MCBs, RCDs, and busbars for easy access, labeling, and maintenance .

Step 6: Verify Compliance with Standards

  • Follow relevant standards such as IEC 61439, IEC 60898, IEC 61008, UL/NEC, or local electrical codes to ensure safety and legal compliance .

Step 7: Optional Features

  • Indication lights for mains status.
