This is done by introducing a time lag, or "soft start" into the circuit that drives the laser diode. The rise time of the current to the laser must be slow enough that the laser has time to heat up, and thus prevent the peak power from ever exceeding rated power. Much of what will be discussed will be in general terms of laser diode performance, warnings, and tips. This allows the output capacitors to charge with a defined current. Although a smooth soft start is required for systems with power-on reset (POR), this is difficult for an isolated converter with a controller on the primary side and a limited duty cycle or current.
