OTN Optical Module Type

The OTN optical module is commonly called the Optical Transport Module (OTM).

The Optical Transport Module (OTM) is the fundamental information structure used in OTN to transport data across optical interfaces, combining both a digital structure and an optical structure for efficient transmission of client signals such as Ethernet, IP, or storage traffic (Ciena) . The OTM serves as the container that carries the Optical Channel Payload Unit (OPU), which holds the actual client data, and the Optical Data Unit (ODU), which includes the OPU plus additional overhead for monitoring, error correction, and management (Ciena) .

Key Components of OTN Modules

  • OPU (Optical Channel Payload Unit): Contains the payload frames of client services and associated overhead for mapping and alignment.
  • ODU (Optical Data Unit): Provides path-level monitoring, multiplexing, and additional overhead such as BIP8, GCC1/2, and Tandem Connection Monitoring (TCM).
  • OTU (Optical Transport Unit): Adds section-level overhead, synchronization, and supports general communication channels for node-to-node management. The OTM is the physical and logical module that enables these layers to function together, ensuring transparent transport, high-capacity multiplexing, and error-protected long-distance transmission (Wikipedia) . In practical deployments, OTN modules are implemented in optical transceivers such as SFP+, SFP28, QSFP+, and QSFP28 that are fully compliant with OTN standards, supporting line rates from 2.5G to 400G and beyond (LINK-PP) .

Summary

In short, the OTN optical module is called the Optical Transport Module (OTM), which encapsulates client data into OPU and ODU structures and transmits it via OTU over optical fiber. This module is central to OTN's “digital wrapper” functionality, enabling high-speed, reliable, and manageable optical transport networks (Ciena) .

Optical transport network

An optical transport network (OTN) is a digital wrapper that encapsulates frames of data, to allow multiple data sources to be sent on the same channel. This creates an optical virtual private network for each client signal.
