Step 1: Mounting the Fiber Distribution Box

Install the fiber distribution box (FDB) at the designated location, either on a wall, pole, or rack. Secure the box using brackets or mounting hardware, ensuring the orientation allows easy access to the front panel for future maintenance or expansion .

Step 2: Cable Entry and Securing

Introduce the incoming fiber optic cable through the designated cable inlet. Use grommets or cable clamps to secure the cable and prevent movement. Ensure the cable is not bent beyond its minimum bend radius (typically ≥40mm) to avoid fiber damage .

Step 3: Fiber Preparation

If using pre-terminated pigtails or branch fibers, strip the outer jacket carefully and prepare the fibers for splicing. For field-installed connectors, cleave the fiber ends precisely at 90 degrees using a high-quality cleaver .

  • Fusion Splicing: Join the incoming fiber strands to pigtail fibers using a fusion splicer. Protect the splice with heat-shrink sleeves and place them in the splice tray.
  • Mechanical Splicing or Connectorization: If using mechanical splices or connectors, insert fibers into the appropriate adapters or splice holders .

Step 5: Fiber Routing and Management

Route the fibers along the internal trays or spools of the FDB, maintaining proper bend radius and avoiding sharp turns. Use cable ties or movable clips to secure fibers without applying excessive tension. Ensure enough slack is provided so the front panel can be fully extended without stressing the fibers .

Step 6: Termination at Adapters or Splitters

Connect the prepared fibers to the optical adapters on the front panel or to any installed splitters. Verify that each fiber is correctly labeled and corresponds to the intended port or subscriber line .

Step 7: Testing and Verification

After all connections are made, test each fiber using an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) or power meter to ensure signal integrity and acceptable loss levels. Document the connections for future maintenance .

Step 8: Final Securing and Closure

Once testing is complete, neatly organize all fibers, secure the splice trays, and close the FDB. Ensure all entry points are sealed to protect against dust, moisture, or mechanical damage . By following this sequence, fiber optic connections in a distribution box are properly managed, protected, and ready for reliable network operation.
