Distribution Box Filling Card

A Distribution Box Filling Card is a reference tool used to calculate and document the total fill of an electrical box, ensuring compliance with code and safe installation.

Purpose of a Box Filling Card

A box filling card helps electricians record and verify the volume allowances for all components inside an electrical box, including conductors, device yokes, internal clamps, support fittings, and equipment grounding conductors. It ensures that the total volume does not exceed the marked box capacity or manufacturer specifications, which is critical for safety and code compliance (NEC Section 314.16) .

Components Considered in Box Fill Calculations

When using a filling card, the following fills are typically accounted for :

  1. Conductor Fill: Each conductor entering, terminating, or splicing in the box counts as one unit. Conductors passing through without termination are also counted once. The volume allowance depends on conductor size.
  2. Clamp Fill: Internal clamps that secure wires or devices add volume to the box.
  3. Support Fittings Fill: Any brackets or supports inside the box contribute to the total fill.
  4. Device or Equipment Fill: Switches, receptacles, or combination devices increase the required box volume. Each device yoke typically adds two conductor equivalents.
  5. Equipment Grounding Conductor Fill: All grounding conductors together count as one conductor regardless of quantity.

Using the Card

  • Record the number of conductors, devices, clamps, and fittings.
  • Convert each component to its equivalent conductor volume based on NEC tables.
  • Sum all allowances to determine the required box volume.
  • Compare the total to the marked box capacity or manufacturer data to ensure compliance.
  • Adjust box size or add extension rings if the calculated fill exceeds the available volume .

Practical Example

For a receptacle box with two cables, a device yoke, internal clamp, pigtails, and grounding conductors:

  • Count each conductor entering the box.
  • Add two for the device yoke.
  • Include one for the clamp.
  • Count all grounding conductors as one.
  • Sum the total and verify against the box's marked volume. If insufficient, select a larger box or use an extension ring .

Benefits

  • Ensures code compliance and safety.
  • Prevents overcrowding, which can cause overheating or damage.
  • Provides a clear record for inspections and future maintenance. A Distribution Box Filling Card is therefore an essential tool for electricians to plan, document, and verify electrical box installations efficiently and safely.
