Proper grounding of the main distribution box ensures safety by providing a low-resistance path for fault currents and stabilizing system voltage.

Purpose of Grounding

Grounding connects the electrical system to the earth, stabilizing voltage during normal operation and safely dissipating high-voltage events like lightning strikes or surges. It also ensures that fault currents can return to the source, allowing circuit breakers or fuses to operate and prevent shock hazards. Bonding joins all non-current-carrying metal parts, including panel enclosures and conduit, to create a continuous low-impedance path for fault current .

Grounding Components

  • Grounding Electrode: Typically a metal rod driven into the earth, made of copper-bonded steel, solid copper, or galvanized steel, depending on soil conditions and durability requirements .
  • Grounding Electrode Conductor (GEC): Connects the grounding electrode to the grounding bus bar in the main panel. Its size is determined by the service-entrance conductors as per NEC Table 250.66 .
  • Equipment Grounding Conductor (EGC): Runs with branch circuits to provide a low-impedance path for fault current back to the panel .
  • Main Bonding Jumper (MBJ): Connects the neutral bus bar to the grounding bus bar in the main panel, ensuring proper bonding only at the main service disconnect .

Installation Guidelines

  1. Wire Sizing: In the US, a 10 AWG (5.26 mm²) ground wire is used for distribution boxes, while other markets may require 6 mm² .
  2. Connection Points: Attach a ground wire from a threaded stud on the distribution box to the mounting plate, then from the mounting plate to the central factory grounding point .
  3. Resistance Requirements: The total ground resistance between system parts should be less than 0.1 Ohm. For tool connections, parallel grounding paths may be used to reduce resistance, especially with long cables or multiple spindles .
  4. Multiple Rods: If soil conditions or resistance testing indicate a value above 25 Ohms, install additional rods connected with continuous conductors to achieve safe grounding .
  5. Surface Preparation: Ensure all contact surfaces are clean and free of oxidation or corrosion, as poor conductivity can compromise safety .

Main Panel vs Subpanel

  • Main Panel: Neutral and ground are bonded here via the MBJ. The grounding electrode conductor connects to the neutral bus bar .
  • Subpanel: Neutral and ground must remain separate. Only the grounding conductor connects to the subpanel's ground bus, and no neutral-to-ground bonding is allowed downstream of the main panel .
