Fiber Optic Terminal Box Overview

A fiber optic terminal box serves as a protective enclosure for splicing and terminating fiber optic cables. It allows multi-core cables to be split and connected to individual pigtails, which are short fiber segments with a connector on one end and a bare fiber on the other for splicing . Terminal boxes can accommodate various connector types, including SC, FC, LC, and ST, and are available in full assembly or empty panel options .

Pigtails and Patch Cords

Optical pigtails are used to connect the fiber cores inside the terminal box to external devices. One end of the pigtail is spliced to the incoming fiber, while the other end has a connector that plugs into a patch cord . Patch cords, also called fiber jumpers, have connectors on both ends and are used to link the terminal box to optical transceivers or network equipment. Single-mode fibers are typically yellow, while multi-mode fibers are orange or gray, indicating their transmission type and distance capabilities .

Connection Process

  1. Splicing: Inside the terminal box, the incoming fiber cores are spliced to the pigtails using fusion splicing or mechanical splicing.
  2. Connectorization: The pigtail connectors are inserted into the adapters or couplers in the terminal box.
  3. Patch Cord Connection: The patch cord is plugged into the corresponding connector on the terminal box, completing the optical path to the network device.
  4. Labeling: Both ends of the patch cord should be labeled with the optical path name and code for proper management .
  5. Testing: Use an optical power meter or visual fault locator to verify signal integrity. Power levels should meet the required thresholds, typically less than -22 dB at the splitter exit and -23 dB at the user end .

  • Maintain the fiber sequence as specified in the construction order and document any changes.
  • Use machine-printed labels for uniformity and clarity.
  • Ensure proper bend radius and secure routing inside the terminal box to prevent signal loss.
  • Choose patch cords and pigtails compatible with the fiber type (single-mode or multi-mode) and connector type of your system . By following these steps, the fiber optic terminal box effectively organizes and protects fiber connections while enabling reliable connectivity through patch cords to network devices.
