Manufacturing Standards for Small Distribution Boxes

Small distribution boxes must comply with material, structural, and safety standards, including steel thickness, anti-corrosion treatment, IP protection, and proper component configuration.

Material and Construction Requirements

Small distribution boxes are typically manufactured from cold-rolled steel sheets or flame-retardant insulating materials. Steel thickness generally ranges from 1.2 mm for switch boxes to 1.5 mm for distribution boxes, with some industrial applications using up to 3 mm for enhanced mechanical strength and electromagnetic shielding . Wooden enclosures are prohibited. The surface must undergo anti-corrosion treatment, such as powder coating or galvanization, and be uniformly painted, often in orange for visibility . Stainless steel may be used for outdoor or chemically aggressive environments .

Structural Design and Cable Management

Distribution boxes must have cable entry and exit points at the bottom, equipped with fixed cable clamps and insulated bushings to prevent direct contact with the enclosure . Portable boxes require rubber-sheathed insulated cables without joints, and plug-and-socket connectors are prohibited for power inlets. The enclosure should provide protection against dust and rain, with an appropriate IP rating based on installation location .

Component Configuration

  • Main Distribution Board (MDB): Includes a main isolator switch, RCD or MCB/MCCB, subcircuit isolator switches, and subcircuit breakers. Optional instruments include voltmeters, ammeters, and kWh meters .
  • Sub-Distribution Board (SDB): Provides both control and protection, typically with main and subcircuit isolator switches and circuit breakers .
  • Final Circuit Switch Box: Must include an isolator switch, circuit breaker or fuse, and RCD. RCBOs may combine these functions . Components are mounted on metal or flame-retardant insulating plates, which are securely fastened inside the enclosure. Metal plates must be electrically bonded to the enclosure, and all components should be firmly secured without tilting or looseness .

Compliance and Standards

Small distribution boxes must comply with international and regional standards:

  • IEC 61439 series for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies .
  • UL 508A and UL 67 for industrial control panels and panelboards in North America .
  • CE marking, Low Voltage Directive (LVD), and EMC Directive for European markets . Internal components, such as busbars and terminals, must meet current-carrying capacity and temperature rise requirements, with copper preferred for conductivity and flame-resistant insulating materials for safety .

Manufacturing Process

The production process includes:

  1. Design & Engineering: CAD/3D modeling based on customer requirements and standards .
  2. Material Preparation: Selection of steel or stainless steel, anti-rust coatings, and quality checks for thickness and corrosion resistance .
  3. Cutting and Forming: CNC laser cutting, punching, bending, and stamping for precision .
  4. Surface Treatment: Powder coating, galvanization, and salt spray testing for durability .
  5. Assembly & Welding: Panels and frames are welded, polished, and openings for components are added .
  6. Inspection: Verification of manufacturing license, product certificate of compliance, factory test records, and functional testing .

Installation Guidelines

Distribution boxes should be installed upright and securely, with mounting heights of 1.4–1.6 m for fixed types and 0.8–1.6 m for portable types. Proper installation ensures safety, accessibility, and compliance with electrical codes . By adhering to these standards, small distribution boxes achieve mechanical durability, electrical safety, and regulatory compliance, ensuring reliable operation in residential, commercial, or industrial applications.
