What is a Fiber Optic Terminal Number?

A fiber optic terminal number is a unique identifier assigned to a fiber optic outlet, which serves as the interface between your device and the fiber optic network. In residential setups, this number is often referred to as the Fiber Socket Number (OTO ID). It is typically printed on the outlet itself and is required during service activation to link your specific outlet to the provider's network .

Structure and Format

The OTO ID usually starts with a letter such as A, B, O, or WP, followed by 9 or 10 digits. This format ensures that each outlet in a building or network is uniquely identifiable. In multi-port outlets, the ports are numbered (1 to 4), and the service provider will specify which port is active for your connection .

Role in the Network

In a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network, the terminal number is part of a hierarchical structure:

  • OLT (Optical Line Terminal): Located at the central office, it manages multiple fiber connections.
  • FDH (Fiber Distribution Hub): Houses splitters in a Passive Optical Network (PON) and distributes fiber to subscribers.
  • Distribution Cables: Carry fiber from the FDH toward subscriber locations.
  • Drop Cables: Connect the final link to the ONT (Optical Network Terminal) at the customer premises . The terminal number ensures that the correct fiber line is activated and monitored, allowing the provider to manage bandwidth, troubleshoot issues, and maintain service quality.

Locating Your Fiber Terminal Number

  • In older buildings, the fiber outlet is usually mounted around 20 cm above the floor in living rooms or hallways, often near other outlets.
  • In newer buildings, outlets may be inside multimedia boxes in hallways.
  • If the OTO ID is not visible, your property management or previous tenant may provide it, or the service provider can assist .
