How to make a pigtail fiber

Fiber optic pigtails are produced by terminating one end of a short fiber with a factory-polished connector and leaving the other end bare for splicing, using precise cutting, stripping, epoxy bonding, curing, polishing, and testing processes.

Materials and Equipment

To produce pigtails, you need:

  • Optical fiber cable (single-mode or multi-mode)
  • Connectors (SC, LC, FC, ST, etc.)
  • Epoxy adhesive (commonly 353 epoxy)
  • Cable cutting and stripping tools
  • Fiber polishing machines and jigs
  • Curing ovens (vertical or horizontal)
  • Microscopes and IL/RL test sets for quality inspection .

Step-by-Step Production Process

  1. Cable Preparation Cut the fiber cable to the required length using a precision cutting machine. Clean the fiber to remove dust and contaminants .
  2. Stripping the Fiber Remove the outer jacket using a jacket stripper, then strip the tight-buffered cladding with a fiber miller stripper to expose the bare core .
  3. Connector Insertion Apply epoxy to the ferrule of the connector and carefully insert the stripped fiber into the ferrule. This can be done manually or with automated machinery .
  4. Curing the Epoxy Place the connectorized fiber in a curing oven to solidify the epoxy, ensuring a strong bond between the fiber and ferrule .
  5. Polishing the Connector End Polish the connector end using specialized jigs and polishing machines to achieve the desired geometry (UPC or APC). This ensures low insertion loss and high return loss .
  6. Cleaning and Inspection Clean the polished end with an ultrasonic cleaner and inspect under a microscope to verify alignment and surface quality .
  7. Testing Perform insertion loss (IL) and return loss (RL) tests to ensure the pigtail meets performance standards .
