Fiber Optic Shape Sensors: A comprehensive review

A notable case study evaluated Raman-type Distributed Fiber-Optic Sensors (DFOSs) and Bragg grating-type Localized Fiber-Optic Sensors (LFOSs) for monitoring concrete dam temperatures. Raman DFOSs provided high spatial resolution and comprehensive thermal mapping, capturing detailed thermal phenomena such as cooling effects in dam galleries and significant thermal gradients, which conventional sensors could not detect. They were easier to install as they did not require trench construction, though data acquisition costs were higher. Bragg-type LFOSs offered localized, reliable measurements with multiplexing capabilities, reducing the number of cables and installation complexity while maintaining data quality comparable to conventional thermometers .
In Italy, DFOS based on Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) technology was applied to High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) water pipelines. The sensors detected strain caused by pressure anomalies, including leaks, by measuring hoop strain variations along the pipeline. FBG sensors provided punctual strain monitoring, while fully distributed DFOS allowed continuous monitoring along the entire pipeline length, making them suitable for large-scale infrastructure. This approach demonstrated high sensitivity, adaptability, and immunity to electromagnetic interference, offering a proactive solution for water loss management .
Fiber optic sensors integrated with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have been applied in healthcare and environmental monitoring. Wearable FOS devices, such as wristbands, track vital signs with enhanced precision. AI integration enables real-time data analysis, subtle change detection, and predictive capabilities, improving patient monitoring and diagnostics. Similarly, environmental applications include monitoring air and soil pollution, where AI-enhanced FOS can detect spectral shifts and minimize errors, providing robust and accurate measurements .
Fiber optic current sensors have been deployed in power generation, oil and gas, telecommunications, and aerospace. These sensors leverage the Faraday Effect to measure current without electrical contact, offering high accuracy, EMI resistance, and non-contact operation. For example, on an offshore oil platform, FOS detected small current fluctuations that conventional sensors would have missed, preventing potential equipment damage. In aerospace, FOS monitored satellite power systems under extreme conditions, demonstrating reliability in harsh environments .
