A household electrical distribution box must be grounded to the earth using a grounding electrode system, with a properly sized grounding electrode conductor connecting the panel to rods, pipes, or concrete-encased electrodes, and bonded to all non-current-carrying metal parts.

Purpose of Grounding

Grounding provides a low-resistance path for fault current to safely flow into the earth, protecting people from electric shock, preventing fires, and stabilizing voltage levels for sensitive electronics. It also allows circuit breakers to detect faults and trip effectively, preventing energized metal surfaces from posing hazards .

Grounding Electrode System

The grounding electrode system connects your electrical panel to the earth. Common electrodes include:

  • Grounding Rods: Copper-clad steel rods, typically 8 feet long, driven vertically into the soil. At least 80% of the rod must be buried .
  • Metal Underground Water Pipes: Must be continuously buried for at least 10 feet to serve as a grounding electrode .
  • Concrete-Encased Electrodes (Ufer Ground): Steel rebar or copper wire encased in the concrete foundation footing .
  • Ground Rings: Buried conductors encircling the structure, if used . If a single rod does not achieve a resistance to ground of 25 ohms or less, a second electrode must be installed at least six feet away .

Grounding Electrode Conductor (GEC)

The GEC is the wire connecting the panel's grounding bus bar to the grounding electrode. Key points:

  • Typically bare or green-insulated copper wire.
  • Size depends on the service entrance conductors; for a 200-amp service, a #4 AWG copper conductor is common .
  • Must be installed as a continuous run and securely fastened to the grounding bus bar inside the panel .

Bonding

Bonding ensures all non-current-carrying metal parts (panel enclosures, metal conduit, appliance frames) are electrically connected, creating a continuous path for fault current back to the source. The Main Bonding Jumper (MBJ) connects the neutral bus bar to the ground bus bar at the main panel, ensuring the system is bonded at a single point .

Installation Considerations

  • Place the grounding electrode as close as practical to the main panel, typically near the foundation .
  • Use listed clamps and connectors rated for direct burial to resist corrosion .
  • Ensure the rod or electrode is flush with or slightly below grade to prevent physical damage .
  • Verify that all connections are tight and continuous to maintain a low-resistance path . Proper grounding is essential for safety, code compliance, and reliable operation of your household electrical system. Always consult local codes and consider hiring a licensed electrician for installation.
