Ordinary optical cables are standard-sized fiber cables suitable for general installations, while miniature (micro) optical cables are smaller, high-density cables designed for space-efficient, high-fiber-count deployments.

Ordinary Optical Cables

Structure and Composition: Ordinary optical cables, often called loose-tube or standard fiber cables, consist of glass fibers encased in protective cladding and a jacket. They may include strength members like aramid yarn and a thick outer jacket for durability . Fiber Count and Size: Standard cables typically have larger diameters, ranging from 13 to 30 mm, and can carry hundreds of fibers (e.g., 144 to 432 fibers) . Installation: These cables are usually pulled through conventional conduits or ducts. Installation is limited by friction and pull tension, often requiring intermediate vaults for long runs . Applications: Ordinary cables are suitable for backbone networks, long-distance outdoor installations, and environments where space is not a constraint. They are robust and can withstand rough handling and harsh conditions .

Miniature (Micro) Optical Cables

Structure and Composition: Microcables are designed for high fiber density in a smaller diameter. They use bend-insensitive fibers with smaller buffer coatings (around 200 microns) to pack more fibers into a compact cable . Fiber Count and Size: A 144-fiber microcable can have an outer diameter of only 7–8 mm, less than half the size of a comparable standard cable. Some high-density microcables can carry up to 6,912 fibers . Installation: Microcables are optimized for blowing into microducts using high-velocity air, which reduces friction and allows multi-kilometer installation in a single shot. Microduct systems also enable future expansion by adding new cables without major construction .
