Overview

Fiber optic cables transmit data as pulses of light through a core made of glass or plastic. The two main types are single-mode (SMF) and multimode (MMF) fibers, each designed for specific use cases and distances .

  • Single-mode fiber has a very narrow core, typically 8–10 micrometers, allowing only one light path to propagate. This minimizes signal loss and modal dispersion, making it ideal for long-distance communication, such as telecom backbones and high-speed internet infrastructure . Single-mode fibers are more expensive and require precise laser sources for transmission .
  • Multimode fiber has a larger core, usually 50 or 62.5 micrometers, which allows multiple light modes to travel simultaneously. This makes it suitable for shorter distances, such as within buildings, data centers, or campus networks. Multimode fibers are generally more cost-effective and easier to install, but they experience more modal dispersion, limiting their maximum transmission distance .

Typical Usage

  • Single-mode: Long-haul networks, metro and regional backbones, 5G infrastructure, and high-bandwidth applications where signal integrity over long distances is critical .
  • Multimode: Short-range connections, data centers, enterprise LANs, and high-density environments where cost and ease of installation are priorities .
