Control Box Distribution Box Housing

Control boxes and distribution boxes are specialized enclosures designed to protect electrical components, manage power distribution, and enable safe operation of machinery or circuits.

Overview

Distribution boxes (also called distribution boards or panels) are central units that distribute incoming electrical power to multiple circuits. They house protective devices such as circuit breakers, fuses, and residual current devices (RCDs), preventing overloads, short circuits, and earth faults while balancing power allocation across circuits for efficiency and safety . They typically handle main supply voltages ranging from 220V to 690V with currents from tens to hundreds of amps . Control boxes, on the other hand, are enclosures for components that start, stop, regulate, and monitor machinery or processes. They contain switches, push buttons, relays, contactors, and sometimes PLCs, timers, and sensors to automate industrial operations. Control boxes usually handle low to medium voltages (24V DC to 400V AC) and are tailored to specific machines or processes .

Materials and Construction

Housings for both types of boxes are made from plastic, aluminum, or stainless steel, depending on the application and environmental requirements . High-quality enclosures provide insulation, mechanical protection, and resistance to dust, water, and impact. For example, PRITEX control cabinets are made of halogen-free ABS, flame-retardant up to 650°C, dustproof, and water-resistant with an IP65 rating and IK10 shock resistance .

Sizes and Mounting

Distribution and control boxes come in a wide range of sizes, from small wall-mounted units to large floor-standing cabinets. Standard panel sizes can accommodate 12 to 42 circuits, while industrial enclosures may be customized for specific equipment or processes . Accessories for mounting, wiring, and connecting components are available to ensure proper installation .

Applications

  • Residential: Breaker boxes, meter panels, and outside electrical boxes for safe home power distribution .
  • Commercial: Standard circuit breaker panels and custom enclosures for equipment control .
  • Industrial: Medium-voltage panels, control panel systems, and junction boxes for automation and process control .
  • Outdoor/Harsh Environments: Weatherproof and IP-rated enclosures for solar, CCTV, or underground cabling .

Key Considerations

  • Protection Rating: Choose IP (ingress protection) and IK (impact resistance) ratings based on environmental exposure.
  • Material: Plastic for lightweight and corrosion resistance, aluminum for durability, stainless steel for extreme conditions.
  • Voltage and Current: Ensure the enclosure matches the electrical load and operational voltage.
  • Customization: Industrial applications may require tailored layouts, cutouts, or integration with PLCs and sensors. By selecting the appropriate housing, you ensure safety, reliability, and longevity of electrical systems while facilitating maintenance and automation.
