Standard Fiber Color Sequence

Inside a fiber optic distribution box, each fiber is color-coded to ensure proper identification and splicing. The TIA-598-C standard defines the following 12-color sequence for individual fibers:

  1. Blue
  2. Orange
  3. Green
  4. Brown
  5. Slate
  6. White
  7. Red
  8. Black
  9. Yellow
  10. Violet
  11. Rose
  12. Aqua For cables with more than 12 fibers, the sequence repeats every 12 fibers, often with a stripe or marking to distinguish higher-numbered fibers (e.g., Fiber #13 is Blue with a stripe) .

Buffer Tube and High-Count Cables

In loose-tube or high-count cables (24, 48, 72, 144 fibers), the buffer tubes themselves are color-coded using the same 12-color sequence. Each tube contains fibers that follow the same 12-color order. For example, in a 48-fiber cable:

  • Tube 1: Blue, Orange, Green, … Aqua
  • Tube 2: Blue, Orange, Green, … Aqua This system allows technicians to locate any fiber quickly, even in large multi-fiber cables .

Connector and Boot Colors

Connector boots or bodies also use color coding to indicate fiber type and polish:

  • Blue: Single-mode UPC
  • Green: Single-mode APC
  • Beige: Multimode OM1/OM2
  • Aqua: Multimode OM3/OM4
  • Ultra Violet or Lime: OM5 or specialized high-density cables This helps prevent misconnection and ensures proper polarity in patch panels and distribution boxes .

Practical Tips

  • Always verify the printed legend on the cable jacket, especially for outdoor or hybrid cables, as jacket color may not always indicate fiber type.
  • Use the 12-color sequence as a guide for splicing, patching, and labeling fibers in the distribution box.
  • For high-density MPO/MTP systems, follow the tube and fiber numbering system to locate fibers accurately. By following these standards, technicians can reduce errors, maintain polarity, and ensure reliable network performance in fiber optic distribution boxes.
