How to set up a Lumi fiber optic sensor

Setting up a Lumi fiber optic sensor involves selecting the correct sensor type, installing and aligning the sensors, connecting the transmitter and receiver, and calibrating the system using Luna's software for accurate data acquisition.

Step 1: Choose the Appropriate Sensor Type

Luna offers a variety of fiber optic sensors, including temperature, pressure, strain, and displacement sensors. Select the sensor type that matches your measurement requirements and the environment in which it will be used .

Step 2: Prepare the Surface and Mount the Sensor

For strain or displacement sensors, prepare the surface similarly to how you would for electrical strain gauges. Clean the surface thoroughly and ensure it is smooth. Use the Fiber Optic Sensor Installation Kit if available, which includes adhesives like M-Bond 200 epoxy suitable for short-term applications and rapid room-temperature curing . Position the fiber sensor carefully, ensuring it is properly aligned along the measurement axis.

Step 3: Connect the Transmitter and Receiver

Ensure that the transmitter and receiver are compatible with the chosen sensor type. Connect the sensors to the transmitter and receiver using the appropriate fiber optic cables. Check that all connections are secure and free from bends or kinks that could affect signal quality .

Step 4: Calibrate the Sensors

Use Luna's ODiSI software or the provided calibration software to calibrate the sensors. This involves:

  • Configuring the software to recognize the connected sensors.
  • Initiating a baseline measurement to establish reference readings.
  • Adjusting calibration parameters to ensure accurate measurement of strain, temperature, or displacement .

Step 5: Data Acquisition and Analysis

Once calibrated, start the data acquisition process. Monitor readings in real-time and ensure the system is capturing data correctly. Use the software tools to analyze the data, generate reports, and visualize measurements for further evaluation .

Step 6: Maintenance and Troubleshooting

  • Inspect sensors regularly for damage, wear, or misalignment.
  • Ensure fiber cables are not bent sharply or exposed to mechanical stress.
  • If readings are inconsistent, check connections, recalibrate the system, and verify that the adhesive bond is intact . By following these steps, you can ensure that your Lumi fiber optic sensor system is properly installed, calibrated, and ready for accurate, real-time measurements.
