Ceramic ferrules are widely used in high-performance single-mode connectors due to their dimensional stability, low thermal expansion, and high precision, which minimize insertion loss and reflection . Stainless steel is often used for alignment pins or sleeves in connectors like MT-RJ or MTP/MPO, providing mechanical strength and durability .
Beyond the connector ferrules, fiber optic cables may include metallic elements such as steel wires or aluminum for armoring, grounding, or tensile strength in outdoor or armored cables . These metals do not carry the optical signal but protect the delicate glass fibers from mechanical stress, environmental hazards, and electrical interference.
