Prism Beam Splitter

A beam splitter prism divides an incoming light beam into two separate beams, typically one transmitted and one reflected, enabling simultaneous use or analysis of the light along different paths.

How It Works

A beam splitter prism is usually constructed from two right-angle prisms cemented together at their hypotenuses, with a semi-reflective coating applied at the interface. When light enters the prism, a portion of the beam is reflected at a 90-degree angle, while the remainder passes through the prism undeviated. This division relies on partial reflection and transmission, controlled by the coating's properties, which can be dielectric or metallic, and is often designed to achieve a specific splitting ratio, such as 50/50 for equal intensity beams .

Types of Beam Splitters

  • Non-polarizing beam splitters: Split light based on intensity, independent of polarization, commonly used in general optical systems .
  • Polarizing beam splitters: Separate light into beams of orthogonal polarization states, often using birefringent materials like Wollaston prisms .
  • Dichroic beam splitters: Divide light based on wavelength, transmitting certain colors while reflecting others, useful in projection and imaging systems .

Applications

Beam splitter prisms are integral in scientific and industrial optics:

  • Interferometry: Create two paths for light to measure interference patterns, as in Mach–Zehnder interferometers or gravitational wave detectors like LIGO .
  • Microscopy and imaging: Direct light simultaneously to multiple sensors or eyepieces, enabling binocular viewing or image capture .
  • Laser systems: Split or combine beams for alignment, measurement, or feedback control .
  • Projection and color separation: Dichroic splitters separate white light into red, green, and blue components for digital projectors .
