How to test after fiber optic splitter

Fiber optic splitters are tested by measuring insertion loss using an optical power meter and light source, following double-ended or single-ended test procedures.

Equipment Needed

  • Optical power meter to measure received optical power.
  • Optical light source at the appropriate wavelength (splitters may be wavelength-dependent).
  • Launch reference cables to connect the source and meter to the splitter.
  • Inspection tools (e.g., USB microscope) to check fiber end faces before testing to prevent damage.

Testing Procedure

  1. Set Up the Source and Reference
    • Connect a launch reference cable to the optical light source.
    • Calibrate the optical power meter with the launch cable to set a 0 dB reference, ensuring accurate loss measurement .
  2. Connect to the Splitter
    • Attach the source launch cable to the splitter input.
    • Connect a receive launch cable from one output port to the optical power meter.
  3. Measure Loss
    • Record the optical power reading. This measures the insertion loss, which includes the split ratio, excess loss from manufacturing, and connector losses .
    • For multiple output ports (e.g., 1x32), move the receive cable to each port in turn and record the loss for each.
  4. Test in Reverse (Upstream)
    • Reverse the direction of the test to measure loss from output ports back to the input, which is important for bidirectional splitters .
  5. Testing Multi-Input Splitters
    • For splitters with multiple inputs (e.g., 2x2 or 2x4), test each input to all outputs individually, recording the loss for each path .
  6. Inspection and Standards Compliance
    • Inspect all fiber connectors before testing to avoid damage.
    • Follow standards such as OFSTP-14 for double-ended loss or FOTP-171 for single-ended testing.
    • Use equipment like the CertiFiber Pro OLTS for automated testing and grading of splitter loss according to ANSI/TIA and ISO/IEC standards .
