Distribution Box (DB) Wiring

A distribution box is used to distribute electrical power from a main supply to multiple branch circuits safely. Key components include the main breaker or isolator, busbars, neutral bars, earth bars, and branch circuit breakers . Proper wiring ensures protection against overloads, short circuits, and electrical faults. Typical wiring steps include:

  • Connect the phase and neutral supply to the main MCB (usually a double-pole MCB for single-phase systems).
  • Connect the output of the main MCB to the input of the RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) for protection against leakage currents and shocks.
  • Branch circuit breakers receive power from the RCCB output. Single-pole MCBs are used for individual loads, while double-pole MCBs may be used for special or high-power loads.
  • Connect all neutral wires to the neutral link and earth wires to the earth link. Ensure proper conductor sizing, torque specifications, and grounding continuity .
  • Use comb busbars where possible for safer and neater connections. Label all circuits for easy maintenance and compliance with IEC or NEC standards .

For single-phase domestic installations, a 30mA RCCB is commonly used, and the main MCB is typically rated at 63A . Proper layout places the main switch on the far left, high-power breakers near the source, and low-power breakers on the far right for balanced load distribution .

MEB (Metal-Enclosed Breaker) Wiring

MEB switchgear is a type of medium-voltage metal-enclosed switchgear designed for industrial or utility applications. It consists of vertical metal sections housing drawout-mounted circuit breakers, load interrupter switches, fuses, and other protective devices . Key points for MEB wiring include:

  • Only qualified personnel should work on MEB equipment due to high-voltage hazards. Follow OSHA and local lock-out/tag-out procedures.
  • Disconnect all low- and medium-voltage sources and verify voltages before starting work.
  • Each vertical section may contain air-insulated, three-pole, gang-operated switches and can be combined with power fuses or vacuum circuit breakers for overcurrent protection.
  • Proper installation requires adherence to ANSI/IEEE C37.20.3 standards and manufacturer-specific instructions. Ensure correct grounding, busbar connections, and breaker alignment.
  • Regular maintenance and inspection are critical for long-term reliability and safety .
