Storage methods for optical cables

Proper storage of optical cables involves protecting them from physical stress, environmental hazards, and improper handling to maintain performance and longevity.

Key Storage Guidelines

Environment: Optical cables should be stored in a dry, clean, and UV-protected area with controlled temperature and humidity. Indoor storage is preferred, even for outdoor-rated cables, to prevent weather-related damage. Avoid areas with chemical exposure, open flames, excessive heat, or falling objects, and maintain relative humidity below 60% for indoor cables . Handling and Transportation: Always handle cable reels carefully. Move heavy reels upright using forklifts, reel movers, or cranes with spreader bars to prevent flange compression. Never drop reels from vehicles or lift them manually if too heavy. Ensure the fork of a forklift does not contact the cable jacket directly . Reel and Cable Management: Store cables on reels or spools in an upright position to prevent tangling, kinks, or loosening of the winding. Maintain the manufacturer-specified minimum bend radius to avoid microbends or macrobends that can degrade signal quality. Use cable ties or Velcro straps to organize and secure cables without applying excessive pressure . Inspection and Protection: Check sealing caps on both ends of the cable before storage and replace any damaged caps. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, which can cause color fading of the sheath, though this does not affect mechanical properties. Ensure even tension during rewinding to prevent permanent damage . Long-Term Considerations: For storage exceeding three months, monitor environmental conditions and inspect reels periodically. Use climate-controlled rooms or cabinets to maintain stable temperature and moisture levels, and keep cables away from high-traffic areas or heavy machinery . By following these practices, optical cables remain organized, protected, and ready for installation, minimizing the risk of hidden or visible damage and ensuring optimal performance.
