Method for connecting light wires to a secondary distribution box

Lighting circuits should be connected to the secondary distribution box using properly sized wires, breakers, and secure terminals, ensuring correct identification of hot, neutral, and earth conductors.

Preparing the Distribution Box

  1. Turn off the main power before starting any work to prevent electric shock.
  2. Identify the main isolator, RCCB, and MCBs in the secondary distribution box. The isolator allows manual disconnection, the RCCB protects against leakage currents, and MCBs protect individual circuits from overload or short circuits .
  3. Plan the lighting circuits according to the load and number of fixtures. Each branch should have a dedicated MCB rated for the total load, typically 15 A for standard lighting circuits .

Wiring the Lighting Circuits

  1. Run the hot (phase) and neutral wires from the MCBs to the junction boxes or directly to the light fixtures. Use 14 AWG copper wire for 15-amp circuits .
  2. Connect the neutral wires to the neutral bus bar in the distribution box. Ensure all connections are tight and free of exposed strands .
  3. Connect the earth wires to the earth bus bar, which should be properly bonded to the earth rod or pit for safety .
  4. Label each conductor clearly with color-coded tape or tags to avoid confusion between feeders, returns, and control lines .

Connecting to Switches and Fixtures

  1. At the switch, connect the hot wire from the MCB to one terminal and the wire going to the light fixture to the other terminal. The neutral bypasses the switch and goes directly to the fixture .
  2. At the light fixture, connect the hot wire to the live terminal and the neutral wire to the neutral terminal. Secure connections using screw terminals or push-in connectors .
  3. Avoid splicing near terminals to reduce resistance and heat buildup. Use pigtails if multiple connections are required .

Testing and Safety Checks

  1. Test each branch individually using a continuity tester or low-voltage source to ensure proper connections and switch operation .
  2. Secure all cables with clips or conduits to prevent movement or accidental contact. Avoid sharp bends or tight loops that could damage insulation .
  3. Perform a final system check by energizing all branches simultaneously and verifying that all lights operate correctly and breakers function as intended . By following these steps, you ensure that lighting circuits are safely and efficiently connected to the secondary distribution box, maintaining proper functionality and compliance with electrical safety standards.
