Overheat protection in relay protection

Thermal or overload relays protect motors and electrical devices from overheating by monitoring current and temperature, tripping the circuit when sustained overload occurs.

How Thermal Overload Relays Work

A thermal overload relay is an electromechanical device designed to prevent motors from overheating due to excessive current. It operates based on the heat generated by the motor: as current increases, a bimetallic strip inside the relay heats up and bends due to the differing expansion rates of the metals. If the motor draws excessive current for too long, the bending triggers the relay to trip, opening the contactor coil circuit and disconnecting power to the motor before damage occurs .

Key Components

  • Bimetallic Strip: Detects temperature changes caused by current flow and bends to activate the trip mechanism .
  • Trigger Mechanism: Opens the circuit when overheating is detected, stopping current flow .
  • Reset Function: Can be manual or automatic, allowing the relay to resume operation once the motor cools down .
  • Current Limit Adjuster: Sets the motor's full-load current (FLA) threshold for overload detection .
  • Auxiliary Contacts: Provide signals for alarms or control systems when the relay trips .

Operational Principles

Thermal overload relays are time-delayed devices. They allow brief inrush currents during motor startup without tripping, but respond to sustained overloads that can cause thermal stress. The trip time is inversely proportional to the overload current: higher currents cause faster tripping, reflecting the motor's thermal behavior . They protect against conditions such as:

  • Prolonged overload
  • Locked rotor or stalled motor
  • Phase loss or imbalance
  • Bearing failure or mechanical jams

Advantages of Using Thermal Overload Relays

  • Motor Protection: Prevents insulation damage and extends motor life.
  • Safety: Reduces risk of electrical fires and equipment failure.
  • Cost-Effective: Minimizes repair and replacement costs by preventing damage.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Helps identify potential issues before they escalate .

Selection Considerations

When choosing a thermal overload relay, consider:

  • Current Rating: Match the relay to the motor's full-load current.
  • Trip Class: Determines the relay's response time to overloads.
  • Reset Type: Manual or automatic, depending on operational needs.
  • Phase-Loss Sensitivity: Ensures protection in case of single-phase operation . Thermal overload relays are essential for reliable motor operation, providing a critical line of defense against overheating while complementing other protective devices like fuses or circuit breakers for short-circuit protection .
