Mercury Wireless Router Fiber Optic Connection Setup

To set up a Mercury wireless router with a fiber optic connection, connect it to the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) via Ethernet, ensure it supports VLAN tagging and DHCP/IPoE, and configure it according to Mercury's fiber settings.

Hardware Setup

  1. Power and Connection: Plug your Mercury router into a power outlet. Connect the router's WAN or internet port to the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) using an Ethernet cable. The ONT converts the fiber optic signal into an Ethernet connection suitable for your router .
  2. Router Requirements: Ensure your router has a Gigabit Ethernet WAN port to handle high-speed fiber connections. It must support VLAN tagging and DHCP/IP over Ethernet (IPoE) to communicate properly with Mercury's network .
  3. Placement: Position the router centrally in your home, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, or metal objects that could block Wi-Fi signals. Maintain at least 5 cm of clearance around the router to prevent overheating .

Configuration

  1. Automatic DNS: Most routers can detect DNS servers automatically. Select this option if available to simplify setup .
  2. Network Settings: If your router does not automatically connect, you may need to manually configure network settings. This can include setting the router to DHCP client mode and ensuring VLAN tagging is enabled .
  3. Testing Connection: After connecting, use a device to browse websites. If the connection fails, verify the Ethernet cable, router settings, and ONT functionality .

Compatibility and Performance

  • Using your own router is allowed, but Mercury cannot guarantee maximum broadband speeds if the router is older or not optimized for fiber .
  • Upgrading to a Wi-Fi 6 or 6E router can help achieve full symmetrical fiber speeds .
  • Some routers from other providers may be locked or require returning; check with your previous provider before using an existing router .

Support

If you encounter difficulties, Mercury provides technical support via online chat or phone at 0800 10 18 10. They can assist with router reconfiguration or troubleshooting . By following these steps, your Mercury wireless router should successfully connect to your fiber optic service, providing high-speed internet throughout your home.
