Cabinet wiring primary line

The primary line in a control cabinet should be routed through dedicated cable ducts, properly grounded, and separated from data cables to ensure safety and compliance with electrical standards.

Routing and Separation

The mains supply line, or primary line, must be routed in the cabinet's dedicated cable ducts to prevent interference and maintain safety. Live cables should never share ducts with data or signal cables, as this can cause electromagnetic interference and compromise system performance. Cable ducts help organize wiring, reduce mechanical stress, and allow for easier maintenance or future modifications .

Grounding

A central grounding point is typically pre-wired to the PE (protective earth) terminal at the factory. All primary line connections should maintain proper grounding to prevent electric shock and ensure system safety. For additional components, a minimum #14 AWG copper drain wire should be connected from junctions to the system ground .

Cable Management and Termination

Use insulated bootlace ferrules for wire terminations to protect strands and ensure reliable contact with terminal blocks. Proper crimping tools should be used to achieve both electrical and mechanical integrity. Color-coded ferrules help identify wire gauge and phase according to local or international standards . Power distribution blocks can be used to split the primary line into branch circuits efficiently, reducing clutter and improving safety .

Safety Considerations

Only certified electricians or trained personnel should perform primary line wiring. Follow all local electrical codes and electrotechnical regulations. Ensure that all live parts are covered for finger protection, and verify that the cabinet door and protective covers are properly installed to prevent accidental contact .

Inspection and Testing

After installation, inspect the cabinet for cleanliness, proper cable routing, and secure connections. Test the PE connections and verify that voltage drops are within acceptable limits. For DC drive cabinets, ensure that all 24V circuits are disconnected during insulation testing . By following these practices, the primary line in a control cabinet will be safe, organized, and compliant with industry standards, minimizing the risk of electrical faults and improving maintainability.
