PoE power supply for network cable switches

PoE (Power over Ethernet) allows network switches to deliver both data and DC power to devices over a single Ethernet cable, eliminating the need for separate power supplies.

How PoE Works

PoE technology enables network devices to receive power and data simultaneously through standard Ethernet cables, such as Cat5, Cat5e, or Cat6 . The system consists of two main components:

  • Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE): Typically a PoE switch or injector that supplies DC power over the Ethernet cable .
  • Powered Devices (PD): Devices like IP cameras, wireless access points, or VoIP phones that extract power and data from the Ethernet connection . PoE switches can be Endspan (integrated power delivery) or Midspan (PoE injectors added to existing non-PoE switches) to provide flexibility in network upgrades .

PoE Standards and Power Levels

There are three main IEEE standards for PoE, each defining the maximum power delivered per port:

  • IEEE 802.3af (PoE): Up to 15.4 W per port, suitable for basic devices like VoIP phones .
  • IEEE 802.3at (PoE+): Up to 30 W per port, ideal for devices with higher power needs such as PTZ cameras or access points .
  • IEEE 802.3bt (PoE++): Up to 60–100 W per port, supporting high-power devices like video conferencing systems or LED lighting . The choice of standard depends on the power requirements of the connected devices and the total power budget of the switch.

Types of PoE Switches

PoE switches vary by port count and power capacity:

  • 24-Port PoE Switches: Suitable for medium-sized networks, providing integrated power to multiple devices .
  • 48-Port PoE Switches: Designed for larger networks requiring high device connectivity .
  • Industrial PoE Switches: Built for harsh environments, often supporting extended temperature ranges and ruggedized construction . Some switches also feature uplink ports for connecting to higher-level network infrastructure while maintaining PoE delivery to end devices .

Practical Considerations

  • Cable Length: PoE power delivery is typically limited to 100 meters per Ethernet cable segment .
  • Power Budget: Ensure the total wattage of all connected devices does not exceed the switch's PoE capacity .
  • Compatibility: Verify that both the PSE (switch) and PD (device) support the same PoE standard to ensure proper operation . Using PoE simplifies network installations by reducing the need for separate power outlets, lowering costs, and enabling flexible device placement . It is particularly useful for IP cameras, wireless access points, and VoIP phones in both enterprise and industrial environments .
