Cable tray horizontal and vertical connection method

Horizontal Connections

Straight Sections: Cable trays are joined end-to-end using splice plates or universal splices that align the side rails and maintain structural integrity. For wire mesh trays, side and bottom wires may need to be trimmed to fit, and splice bars are centered over the connection and secured with brackets or clamps . Horizontal Bends: To change direction on the same plane, elbows or radius bends are used. These can be pre-fabricated or formed on-site for wire mesh trays by cutting and shaping the side wires to the desired bend radius . Reducers: When connecting trays of different widths, a combination of side and bottom wires is adjusted to transition smoothly from a wider main run to a narrower branch . Tees and Crosses: These fittings allow branching of the cable tray system to route cables to multiple areas. Proper alignment and secure fastening with splice plates or clamps are essential to maintain load capacity .

Vertical Connections

Vertical Bends (Risers): To move cables between elevations, vertical elbows or risers are installed. These maintain the minimum bend radius for cables and prevent damage . Threaded Rod Hangers and Clamps: Ladder trays are often supported vertically using threaded rods with ladder tray clamps. The installation involves placing washers and hex nuts above and below the clamp to secure the tray at the desired height. For double ladder trays, double clamps (DC) can be used to support adjacent trays . Drop-Outs: For vertical cable exits to equipment below, drop-out fittings allow cables to leave the tray without sharp bends, preserving cable integrity . Supports: Vertical connections must be anchored to the building structure using wall brackets, ceiling mounts, or floor supports. Proper spacing of hangers ensures the tray can carry the intended load without sagging .
