Pigtail Installation Location

A pigtail is installed inside an electrical box, connecting the main circuit wires to a device such as an outlet, switch, or fixture.

Placement in Electrical Wiring

A pigtail is a short wire, typically 6–8 inches long, used to connect multiple circuit conductors to a single terminal on a device. It is installed inside the electrical box, not along the main circuit path, acting as an intermediary between the main wires and the device terminals . One end of the pigtail is attached to the device's screw terminal (hot to brass, neutral to silver, ground to green or bare), while the other end is spliced to the incoming and outgoing circuit wires using a wire nut or approved connector .

Purpose of the Location

Installing the pigtail inside the box ensures that the device itself does not carry the full current to downstream outlets, which improves circuit reliability and safety. If a device terminal becomes loose, the pigtail splice maintains power flow to other devices on the circuit . This location also allows for easier maintenance, modifications, and compliance with electrical codes.

Steps for Proper Installation

  1. Turn off power at the breaker and verify with a voltage tester .
  2. Prepare the pigtail wires by cutting them to the appropriate length and stripping about ¾ inch of insulation from each end .
  3. Connect one end of each pigtail to the corresponding terminal on the device (hot, neutral, ground), .
  4. Splice the other end with the main circuit wires inside the box, twisting them together and securing with a wire nut .
  5. Ensure all connections are tight, with no exposed copper below the wire nut, and neatly arrange the wires inside the box before mounting the device .

Special Considerations

  • For metal boxes, attach the ground pigtail to the box using a green grounding screw or clip .
  • For plastic boxes, route the ground directly to the device terminal, maintaining proper clearance from live wires .
  • Pigtails can also be used in automotive or fiber optic applications, where one end connects to a device or connector and the other to the main harness or fiber strand . By installing pigtails inside the electrical box at the device location, you ensure a secure, code-compliant, and serviceable connection that isolates the device from the main circuit while maintaining continuity for downstream devices .
