What are the installation processes for fiber optic trays

Installing fiber optic trays involves careful preparation, precise cable handling, secure mounting, and organized splicing to ensure optimal network performance.

Preparation and Planning

Before installation, gather all necessary tools and materials, including fiber optic strippers, cleavers, fusion splicers, heat shrink sleeves, cleaning kits, safety glasses, and labeling materials. Ensure the work area is well-lit and clean to prevent contamination of fiber ends, which can cause signal loss. Plan the tray layout according to the network design, considering future expansions and the routing of fiber cables through ducts, risers, or trays .

Mounting the Fiber Tray

  1. Positioning: Place the tray in the designated rack, cabinet, or enclosure. Ensure it is level and properly aligned with other trays or components.
  2. Securing: Use the provided fasteners, brackets, or couplers to attach the tray. Finger-tighten screws initially to align all runs, then fully tighten to secure the tray. Verify that all horizontal and vertical runs are straight and adequately supported .
  3. End Caps and Covers: Install end caps or covers to protect the tray edges and prevent accidental fiber damage. Ensure brackets are positioned correctly on the outside of the tray sides .

Cable Preparation and Handling

  1. Stripping and Buffer Tube Removal: Carefully strip the outer jacket of the fiber optic cable and remove buffer tubes to access individual fibers, avoiding microbends or breaks .
  2. Cleaning and Cleaving: Clean each fiber with alcohol wipes and lint-free cloths. Use a precision cleaver to cut fiber ends at a right angle, which is essential for effective splicing .
  3. Maintaining Bend Radius: Respect the minimum bend radius of the fiber to prevent signal attenuation. Avoid twisting or excessive tension during installation .

Splicing and Organizing Fibers

  1. Fusion or Mechanical Splicing: Align fibers using a fusion splicer for a seamless connection or a mechanical splice with index gel. Fusion splicing provides lower loss, while mechanical splicing is faster but slightly higher in attenuation .
  2. Securing Splices: Place spliced fibers into the designated slots of the tray. Use heat shrink sleeves or protective covers to secure and protect the splices.
  3. Labeling and Documentation: Label each fiber and splice location clearly to facilitate future maintenance and troubleshooting. Use tray blanking plates if necessary to maintain organization .

Final Checks

  • Verify that all fasteners are tight and trays are properly supported.
  • Ensure fibers are neatly routed without crossing or tangling.
  • Confirm that all splices are protected and that the tray is closed securely.
  • Conduct testing using OTDR or power meters to ensure minimal signal loss and proper connectivity . By following these steps, fiber optic trays can be installed efficiently, protecting delicate fibers and ensuring reliable network performance.
