A fiber optic sensor is a sensing device that uses optical fiber to detect physical, chemical, or biological changes by measuring variations in light intensity, phase, wavelength, polarization, or scattering within the fiber.

Overview

Fiber optic sensors rely on light traveling through optical fibers. External influences—such as temperature, strain, pressure, vibration, or chemical composition—alter the light's properties, which are then measured by a detector. They can be intrinsic (fiber itself is the sensing element) or extrinsic (fiber transmits light to/from a remote sensor).

Types of Fiber Optic Sensors

2. Extrinsic Sensors

The fiber transmits light to/from an external sensing element. Used for:

  • Selective chemical sensing
  • Specialized biomedical applications

Common Sensing Principles

  • Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG): Wavelength shifts indicate strain or temperature changes.
  • Interferometry: Measures phase changes for high-precision sensing.
  • Rayleigh, Raman, Brillouin scattering: Enables fully distributed sensing over kilometers.
  • Intensity modulation: Simplest form; detects changes in light intensity.
