Belize National Standards (BNS) are developed and maintained by the Belize Bureau of Standards (BBS), a statutory body responsible for establishing, monitoring, and enforcing standards for goods, services, and processes in Belize . These standards cover areas such as labeling, packaging, metrology, consumer protection, and product quality, ensuring that both locally manufactured and imported goods meet minimum requirements for legal trade .

1. Labeling Standards:
   • General Principles: Guidelines for labeling goods in trade.
   • Prepackaged Goods: Requirements for labels on retail-ready products, including display methods, wording, and units of measurement.
   • Prepackaged Foods: Specific labeling rules for food products offered to consumers or catering services.
   • Cigarettes and Brewery Products: Mandatory text warnings and labeling for retail packages and brewery products sold in Belize and the Caribbean Common Market.
   • Gas and Medical Gas Cylinders: Standards for marking and labeling to indicate contents and hazards .
2. Product and Process Standards: BNS also cover technical criteria for domestically produced, imported, and exported goods, including fuels, lubricants, and LPG, often aligned with ASTM International standards .
3. Forest Stewardship and Environmental Standards: Interim national standards exist for certifying forest operations in Belize, following FSC Principles & Criteria, ensuring sustainable and responsible resource management .

Regulatory Framework

The BBS operates under the Standards Act of 1992, revised in 2000, and follows Good Standardization Practices in line with the WTO TBT Agreement . The process involves:
