How to install cable trays in silos

Installing cable trays in silos requires careful planning, proper support, and adherence to electrical standards to ensure safety and maintainability.

Planning and Design

Before installation, review approved shop drawings showing the tray route, dimensions, support system, and cable types to be installed . In silos, vertical routing is common, so plan for vertical supports, bends, and clearances. Ensure the tray does not interfere with silo operations, structural elements, or other services like ventilation or piping . Maintain a minimum vertical distance of 30 cm between multiple layers of trays if stacking is required .

Selecting the Right Tray

Choose a tray type suitable for the environment:

  • Ladder trays for airflow and heavy cables
  • Perforated trays for lighter loads
  • Solid-bottom trays for sensitive electrical circuits Consider material (galvanized steel, stainless steel, aluminum, or fiberglass) based on corrosion resistance and silo conditions .

Supports and Mounting

  • Use brackets, clamps, or hangers rated for the tray load.
  • In vertical installations, supports should be spaced according to tray type and load, typically 1.5–3 meters horizontally and closer for vertical runs to prevent sagging .
  • Establish a level reference line using a laser or string to maintain alignment .
  • Avoid cutting or drilling structural members without approval .

Cable Installation

  • Respect the minimum bending radius of cables; the tray bends should match or exceed the largest cable radius .
  • If multiple cable types share a tray, consider separators for high-voltage and low-voltage cables, unless using MC-type cables rated 600V or less .
  • Ensure electrical continuity every 18 meters and proper grounding of the tray system .

Safety and Compliance

  • Follow IEC 61537, NEC Article 392, and local building codes .
  • Inspect all materials for damage before installation and remove unsuitable items .
  • Maintain accessibility for future maintenance, leaving at least 300 mm clearance above or between trays .
