VMware Active-Active Data Center Solution

VMware Active-Active Data Center solutions enable high availability and disaster recovery by distributing workloads across multiple sites or nodes, ensuring continuous operation and minimal downtime.

Overview

An Active-Active Data Center setup in VMware environments allows multiple data centers or clusters to operate simultaneously, sharing workloads and providing redundancy. This approach improves availability, load balancing, and disaster recovery capabilities compared to traditional active-passive configurations . VMware achieves this through a combination of vSphere Metro Storage Cluster (vMSC), vCenter High Availability (vCenter HA), NSX multi-site networking, and storage replication technologies.

Key Components

1. vSphere Metro Storage Cluster (vMSC)

  • vMSC enables synchronous replication between geographically separated sites, allowing VMs to run on either site without downtime.
  • It provides low Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO), ensuring minimal data loss during failures .
  • Often paired with storage solutions like Pure Storage ActiveCluster, which provides true Active-Active replication across sites . 2. vCenter High Availability (vCenter HA)
  • Introduced in vSphere 6.5, vCenter HA deploys a three-node cluster (Active, Passive, Witness) to protect the vCenter Server from hardware or software failures .
  • While vCenter HA is technically active-passive, it ensures that management services remain available and can be combined with vMSC for broader Active-Active operations . 3. NSX Multi-Site Deployments
  • VMware NSX-V can be used with F5 BIG-IP DNS or Universal Distributed Routers (UDLRs) to provide Active-Active North/South connectivity across multiple sites .
  • This allows applications to use site-local ingress/egress, optimizing traffic flow and reducing latency while maintaining redundancy. 4. Storage and Network Considerations
  • Active-Active setups require synchronous storage replication, robust data center interconnects (DCI), and redundant networking to handle failover scenarios .
  • vSAN clusters can be configured with Storage Policy-Based Management to ensure consistent performance and availability across sites .

Deployment Models

  • Single Data Center Active-Active: Multiple clusters or hosts within a single site share workloads using vSphere Fault Tolerance and vCenter HA for management redundancy .
  • Multi-Site Active-Active: Workloads are distributed across two or more sites using vMSC, ActiveCluster, and NSX multi-site routing, providing true geographic redundancy and load balancing .

Best Practices

  • Ensure sufficient bandwidth and low latency between sites for synchronous replication.
  • Use consistent vSphere versions and configurations across sites.
  • Implement monitoring and automated failover testing to validate Active-Active behavior.
  • Combine compute, storage, and network redundancy to achieve optimal RTO/RPO.

Summary

VMware Active-Active Data Center solutions combine vSphere Metro Storage Cluster, vCenter HA, NSX multi-site networking, and storage replication to provide continuous availability, disaster recovery, and load balancing. While vCenter HA itself is active-passive, integrating it with vMSC and multi-site NSX deployments enables a true Active-Active operational model, ensuring minimal downtime and resilient infrastructure .
