Single-fiber communication enables bidirectional data transmission over a single optical fiber using different wavelengths, maximizing fiber utilization and reducing costs.

Overview

Single-fiber communication, also known as single-strand or simplex fiber transmission, allows data to be sent and received over the same fiber strand. Traditionally, fiber networks required two fibers—one for transmitting (TX) and one for receiving (RX). Single-fiber systems achieve full-duplex communication by using two different wavelengths traveling in opposite directions, a method often implemented with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) couplers or diplexers integrated into optical transceivers .

How It Works

  • Bidirectional Transmission (BiDi): Two wavelengths are assigned for opposite directions. For example, one end transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1550 nm, while the other end uses the reverse configuration .
  • WDM Couplers: These devices combine and separate the two wavelengths on a single fiber, ensuring signals do not interfere with each other .
  • Single-Fiber SFP Modules: These transceivers integrate the BiDi functionality, allowing simultaneous TX and RX over one fiber strand, reducing fiber usage by half without compromising speed or reliability .
