Fiber optic cables are connected in three ways

Fiber optic cables are connected through fusion splicing, mechanical splicing, and termination with connectors.

1. Fusion Splicing

Fusion splicing is a method where two fiber ends are precisely aligned and then fused together using heat generated by an electric arc. This creates a continuous glass path, resulting in very low signal loss (typically 0.01–0.03 dB) and minimal back reflection. Fusion splicing is highly reliable and is commonly used for long-distance or high-performance networks where signal integrity is critical .

2. Mechanical Splicing

Mechanical splicing involves aligning two fiber ends within a mechanical fixture that holds them in place. The fibers are not permanently fused but are precisely positioned so light can pass from one fiber to the other. Typical signal loss ranges from 0.1 to 0.3 dB, making it slightly less efficient than fusion splicing. Mechanical splicing is faster and does not require expensive fusion equipment, making it suitable for temporary or emergency connections .

3. Termination with Connectors (Connectorization)

Termination, or connectorization, involves attaching a fiber optic connector to the end of a fiber so it can be easily connected to other fibers or devices. Connectors such as LC, SC, and ST types are used to link fibers through patch panels, switches, or adapters. This method allows for modular, reusable connections and is widely used in data centers, telecommunications, and industrial applications. Proper alignment and polishing of the fiber faces are essential to minimize signal loss and reflection .
