How to wire the meters in the integrated power distribution box

Wiring meters in a distribution box requires connecting the utility's Line and Neutral conductors to the meter socket, then routing the Load side to the main panel, while following strict safety protocols.

Safety First

Before starting, ensure the main power supply is completely disconnected by coordinating with your local utility company, as the Line side of the meter socket is always energized and can cause severe injury or death if mishandled . A permit from the local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) is typically required, and work should be performed or supervised by a licensed electrician .

Components Overview

  • Meter Socket (Meter Box): Holds the utility meter and serves as the gateway for electricity entering the building .
  • Line Side: Connects to the utility's incoming L1, L2 (and L3 for three-phase) conductors. These lugs are always live until the utility disconnects power .
  • Load Side: Connects from the bottom lugs of the meter socket to the main breaker or distribution panel .
  • Neutral Bar: Bypasses the meter jaws and connects directly to the utility neutral, providing a return path and grounding point .
  • Main Breaker/Disconnect: Allows safe disconnection of power to the building for maintenance .

Wiring Steps

  1. Mount the Meter Box: Secure the meter socket to the structure and ensure proper alignment with the service entrance conduit .
  2. Connect Line Conductors: Attach the utility L1 and L2 wires to the top Line lugs of the meter socket. For three-phase systems, include L3 .
  3. Connect Neutral: Run the utility neutral wire directly to the Neutral Terminal Bar inside the meter socket .
  4. Connect Load Conductors: From the bottom Load lugs of the meter socket, connect wires to the main breaker terminals in the distribution panel .
  5. Grounding: Connect the grounding electrode conductor from the neutral bar to the building's grounding system .
  6. Install Circuit Breakers: Inside the distribution panel, install breakers according to load requirements and wire each branch circuit .
  7. Inspection and Testing: After wiring, have the installation inspected by the AHJ and test all connections with a voltage tester before energizing .

Additional Tips

  • Use appropriately sized wires for the amperage rating of the service (commonly 100A or 200A for residential) .
  • Ensure all connections are tight and secure to prevent overheating or arcing .
  • Follow single-phase or three-phase wiring diagrams depending on your system .
  • Always wear insulated gloves and use voltage-rated tools when working near energized components . By following these steps and adhering to safety regulations, the meter and distribution box can be wired correctly, ensuring accurate energy measurement and safe power distribution throughout the building .
