Physical Inspection

Start by checking the reel and cable for physical damage. Inspect the reel flanges for cracks, loose bolts, or debris that could damage the cable during payout, and ensure the cable jacket is intact without kinks, bends, or crushing marks. Wooden or steel reels may expand or contract due to temperature and humidity, so confirm all flange bolts are tight before handling the reel with a forklift or other equipment . Avoid lifting the reel from the tail-flange side to prevent crushing the cable .

Cable Verification

Verify the cable specifications and length against the manufacturer's data sheet. Use an optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) or an optical fault locator to measure the fiber length while the cable is still on the reel. This ensures the cable is not shorter than advertised and identifies any breaks or faults . For copper cables, a network cable tester can measure length and detect open circuits .

Optical Performance Testing

Measure the main optoelectronic characteristics, including fiber attenuation and uniformity along the length. If an OTDR is unavailable, a light source and optical power meter can provide a basic test . Compare the results with the manufacturer's specifications to confirm quality.

Connector Inspection and Cleaning

Inspect all fiber connectors for dirt or damage using a video microscope. Even a single particle can cause reflection, attenuation, or equipment damage . If the ferrule is dirty, clean it with isopropanol wipes or a click cleaner designed for the specific ferrule size before connecting . Only remove protective covers immediately before installation to prevent contamination .

Safety and Handling Precautions

Wear appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves, eyewear, and headgear. Avoid excessive pulling, bending, or crushing of the cable, and respect the minimum bend radius specified by the manufacturer . Ensure all personnel are familiar with safety regulations and company practices before starting inspection or respooling operations .

Documentation

Record all inspection results, including cable length, attenuation, and connector status, in a test form or technical data sheet. This documentation ensures compliance with design specifications and supports warranty claims if defects are found .
