Single mode fiber (SMF) has a small core for long-distance, high-bandwidth transmission, while multimode fiber (MMF) has a larger core for short-distance, cost-effective applications.

Core and Light Propagation

  • Single Mode Fiber (SMF): Core diameter ~9 µm, cladding 125 µm. Allows only a single light mode, reducing modal dispersion and enabling long-distance transmission .
  • Multimode Fiber (MMF): Core diameter 50 µm or 62.5 µm, cladding 125 µm. Supports multiple light modes simultaneously, which can cause modal dispersion and limits distance .

Wavelength and Attenuation

  • SMF: Typically uses 1310 nm or 1550 nm wavelengths. Lower attenuation, ideal for long-haul networks .

Transmission Distance and Bandwidth

  • MMF: Effective for distances <550 meters. Bandwidth depends on standard: OM1/OM2 lower, OM3/OM4/OM5 higher for data centers and LAN backbones .

  • MMF: OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4, OM5; jacket colors: orange (OM1/OM2), aqua (OM3/OM4), lime green (OM5) .

  • MMF: Data centers, local area networks (LANs), CCTV systems, short-distance indoor cabling .

Cost and Installation

  • SMF: Higher cost due to precise manufacturing and laser sources. Installation requires careful alignment .
  • MMF: Lower cost, easier to install, less sensitive to dust and alignment due to larger core .

Key Considerations

  • Do not mix SMF and MMF in the same network; connectors and transceivers differ .
  • SMF is better for future-proofing networks with higher speeds and longer distances. MMF is cost-effective for short-range, high-density environments .
